Co-ops step up to Flatten the Curve

In recent weeks, we have seen local shops close, calls for social distancing and millions of people across the world modifying their daily lives in light of the COVID-19 crisis.

As the world around us slows, essential businesses like grocers have been forced to implement major changes in order to maintain safety and supply. Co-op is no exception. With locations in nearly 600 communities across Western Canada, we’ve been hard at work modifying our practices and creating clean, safe, well-stocked environments for our customers. With the help of Co-op team members, communities and customers, we’re finding innovative ways to serve and connect during this unprecedented time.

People are at the core of Co-op. From our local producers to our in-store employees, we’re a community of passionate people who believe in working together. Co-op stores across the country have been finding innovative ways to serve their customers during this time. Here are a few highlights:

  • Riverbend Co-op in Saskatchewan was quick to implement one-way traffic through their aisles in order to maintain social distancing regulations. The employees taped arrows on the floor to show customers where to go, ensuring that everyone is safe and comfortable while they shop. Now, a few weeks into the pandemic, many more Co-op locations have also moved to one-way shopping aisles.
  • In Lloydminster, employees took the time to create inexpensive care packages containing essential goods for seniors and immune-compromised community members.
  • Many Co-ops are offering free deliveries or parking lot pick-ups for customers wanting to limit their exposure and maintain distance. Stores are taking orders by phone, email or online order forms.
  • Discovery Co-op knows that protecting employees helps protect customers, too. They were one of the first Co-op locations to install plexiglass shields at their check-out counters to keep everyone safe. Now, we’re seeing this feature at nearly every Co-op food store.
  • In Manitoba, community volunteers are helping stock shelves, disinfecting high-touch areas and shopping for delivery orders.

We’re proud to see our network of Co-ops connecting with their communities and sharing helpful initiatives during this difficult time. To find out what measures your local Co-op has taken to help flatten the curve, contact them directly.

We don’t know when our world will get back to normal, but we do know that our community is stronger than ever. Thank you for your support as we navigate this new territory. Co-op cares, and we’re here to help.
