Helper Highlight: Providing Care in Porcupine Plain

COVID-19 has made vulnerable populations even more vulnerable. With the added threat to seniors and immunocompromised peoples, many individuals have been unable to visit their elderly family members.

Caregivers and nurses continue to be on the front lines, providing not only medical support but also emotional care and companionship.

Veronica is a Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) in Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan. During the COVID-19 crisis, she has been diligently working with at-risk seniors, providing love and support while families are unable to visit. Veronica loves the residents at her nursing home as if they were her own family. She helps them feel beautiful by doing their hair and make-up and helps them pick their favourite outfits to wear each day. When they are forgetful, she is patient and kind and helps them retrace their steps and recollect their thoughts.

By providing friendship, compassion and patience to vulnerable seniors, Veronica is ensuring that no one is left behind while we all wait out this crisis. She has demonstrated an immense power of heart during this time, all while being an avid participant in her local community.

Thank you, Veronica, for all that you have done and continue to do. Your work does not go unnoticed!

We asked Co-op members, customers and team members to nominate people who are making a difference in their communities during the pandemic. We’re sharing a selection of stories about these helpers and what they are doing for their friends, families and neighbours during this time.
